Case Study 6 -
East London Roof Terrace
The roof garden of this small terraced house sits right on the corner of Colombia Rd E2, a bustling Sunday Street market selling all types of fresh flowers, plants, shrubs & trees together with art galleries, cup cake shops & small independent boutiques and retro.
The roof of this old property is accessed by a tiny narrow staircase which made for a challenging build. The old parapet wall was topped with original iron railings which had to stay so GRP planters were installed around three sides of the terrace to give screening & privacy. These were planted with Griselinia littoralis the New Zealand broad leaf. This tough, quick growing evergreen will soon form a thick hedge.
A split level Cedar deck with matching seating forms the flooring and gives a light feel to the terrace. A large feature planter in bold orange makes the focal point to show off a chunky olive tree up little from below.
